INSTALLATION
The computer Help file of The Constitution of the United
States requires a personal computer running the
Microsoft(tm) Windows(r) operating system version 3.1 or
higher.
If you have received a standard installation disk from a
retail or shareware vendor or from Arbor Verde Press
directly, place the disk in your disk drive, select File-Run
from the Windows Program Manager and type A:SETUP<ENTER> (or
B:SETUP<ENTER>). If you have received a "ZIP" file from a
computer bulletin board, shareware vendor or on-line
service, first use an unzip utility to extract the files to
a floppy disk; then run setup as explained above. If you
need help with an unzip utility, you may be able to receive
assistance from your disk vendor or BBS operator.
ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND OPTIONS
During installation, the setup program will ask you to
verify the location of your shared Windows directory. Unless
you have a different location on a network, or have modified
your windows setup, you should accept the default which is
normally \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
During installation, you will be presented with a suggested
directory on your hard drive to copy the program
(C:\CONSTI). If the directory does not exist, it will be
created for you. If you want to install the program to a
different drive and directory, enter the information as
desired. You should not install the program to a common
directory such as \Windows or \DOS or the root directory of
your computer (C:\).
During installation, you will be presented with a suggested
program group in which to install the icon for the program
(Arbor Verde Press). If this program group does not exist,
it will be created for you. If you want the icon installed
in a different program group, choose one of your existing
program groups from the list shown.
During installation, you may be presented with the option of
changing the "jump" colors used by the Windows help system.
Normally, jump topics are underlined and green. If you wish
to change the colors, select that option when presented. If
you choose it you will be changing the colors for ALL your
Windows help files, not just the Constitution help file.
Select whether you want to change the colors or leave them
alone, as desired. If you choose to modify your colors,
setup will modify the [Windows Help] section of WIN.INI. If
you change your mind later and want to set them to a
different color, you can re-run the installation program and
reselect the Change Colors option.

INTRODUCTION TO THIS EDITION
Phrases in parenthesis and italicized are not part of the
document itself but are explanatory notes. Phrases and words
struck out and in parenthesis have been superseded or
modified by various amendments and are no longer applicable.
Paragraph numbers italicized and in parenthesis, e.g. (1.),
are informational and not contained in the original. The
Article and Section headings (e.g. Article 1, Section 1) are
standardized here to provide a consistent format for
indexing and "jump topic" programming, and do not reflect
the exact phrasing of or positioning in the original
document.
DISCLAIMER
Although reasonable efforts have been made to assure
accuracy in transcribing the files contained here to
computer, the possibility of typographical errors cannot be
completely eliminated. In addition, different versions and
copies of The Constitution and other historical documents
exist, and they vary in capitalization, punctuation,
spelling and other minor points. The official version of The
Constitution complete with annotations, footnotes,
citations, commentary, court cases and other information is
authorized by Congressional Act, updated and published every
ten years by the Library of Congress and available for sale
in hardback book form to the public by the United States
Superintendent of Documents. It alone should be considered
the sole authority over all other published versions if
utmost accuracy is desired. Copies are available for review
at most public libraries. This Arbor Verde Press version
follows as closely as possible the spelling, punctuation and
capitalization conventions (but not page layout) of the
engrossed literal text version, signed by George Washington
and deputies from twelve states, as represented in the 1970
Library Of Congress decennial version, including any
possible typographical or transcription errors as may exist
in that document.
